Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to mess around with making a watch for a while now, and I finally dove in. I picked the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001 ’cause, well, it’s a classic, right? Plus, the design seemed not too crazy for a first attempt. Although it’s a complex design, I tried my best to follow it.

First off, I spent a ton of time just staring at pictures of this thing online. I mean, really staring. Trying to get a feel for the proportions, the details, all that jazz. There are some nice photos of Patek Philippe on Instagram and Facebook. But the key is to start this project.

Then came the fun part – trying to find the right materials. I learned a bit of knowledge from Palloys since I am in Australia. It seemed a good idea to start from the original material. I wasn’t about to drop a fortune on real gold, so I had to get creative. I found some brass sheets that I figured I could work with. And for the crystal, I ended up using a piece of acrylic. It’s not sapphire, but it gets the job done, I guess. After all, I am just trying to remake one for fun.

The real work begins

Cutting out the case was a real pain. I don’t have any fancy CNC machines or anything, so it was all done by hand with a jeweler’s saw and a lot of patience. Let me tell you, my hands were cramping up like crazy. But eventually, I had something that resembled a watch case. Also, I used Excel to keep track of all the measurements and stuff. That program is a lifesaver for organizing things, you know? I had a basic worksheet named by what was in cell A1.

Then came the dial. That was a whole other beast. I tried a few different methods, including printing it out and even trying to paint it by hand. After messing up a bunch of times, I managed to get something that looked halfway decent. The key is to have the right predictors of the outcome.

  • Cutting the case by hand was tough, but satisfying.
  • Figuring out the dial took some trial and error.
  • Assembling everything was like putting together a tiny, intricate puzzle.

Putting it all together

The movement was the biggest hurdle. I’m not a watchmaker, so I just used a cheap quartz movement I found online. It’s not automatic or anything, but it tells the time, which is the main thing, right? After that, I managed to make it. The macro function from Excel really helped a lot.

Assembling everything was like putting together a really complicated puzzle. I had to be super careful not to scratch anything or mess up the alignment. After a lot of fiddling and adjusting, it was finally done.

It’s definitely not perfect. There are some rough edges, and it’s not as polished as a real Patek Philippe, obviously. But I’m pretty proud of it, considering it’s my first try. Now I have my own Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227J-001, sort of. It’s more like a tribute, I guess. It’s not about having a fancy watch, but more about the journey of making it myself. It’s a reminder that you can create something cool with your own two hands if you put your mind to it. Just like deciding for whom to produce a potentially scarce resource, I finally made one for myself!

So, yeah, that’s the story of my little watchmaking adventure. Learned a lot, messed up a lot, but in the end, I made something I’m happy with. Maybe I’ll try another one someday, who knows?
