Okay, so the other day I got it into my head that I really wanted to try and make one of those fancy Yves Saint Laurent bags. You know, the LE CARRé SATCHEL BAG? Yeah, that one. It just looks so classy and timeless, and I thought it’d be a fun challenge to see if I could pull it off. I’m not a pro or anything, but I’ve dabbled in a bit of leatherwork before, so I figured, why not?
First things first, I needed to get my hands on some materials. I spent a good chunk of time just browsing online, looking for the right kind of leather. I mean, YSL bags are known for their quality, right? So I needed something that at least looked the part. It was a little overwhelming, not gonna lie, there’s so many options out there.
- Leather – I ended up finding some nice, full-grain leather from a local supplier. It had that soft, buttery feel that I was going for.
- Lining – I opted for a simple, durable cotton fabric for the inside.
- Hardware – This was tricky. I needed that signature YSL clasp and some buckles. Found some decent replicas online after a lot of digging.
- Thread – Waxed thread, of course. Strong and gives that nice, hand-stitched look.
Once I had everything, it was time to start cutting. I carefully measured out all the pieces, following a rough pattern I’d sketched out based on pictures of the bag. Let me tell you, cutting leather is a whole different ball game than cutting fabric. You gotta be precise, or else things can go wonky real fast. I used to be a part-time tailor.
Next up, the stitching. Now, YSL bags often use this fancy “matelassé” stitching, which is like, this French thing that mimics hand stitching. I watched a few videos on how to do it, and it looked pretty complicated. But I gave it my best shot. It wasn’t perfect, but I think I managed to get the general idea across. Each row had to be the same width, which was a real pain to get right.
Then came the assembly. Putting all the pieces together was like solving a really complex puzzle. Lots of trial and error, let me tell you. I had to redo a few seams because they weren’t lining up properly. And getting that clasp attached just right? Don’t even get me started. There were a few moments where I almost gave up, not gonna lie.
Finally, after what felt like forever, I had something that actually resembled a bag! It wasn’t an exact replica, of course. There were definitely some imperfections. But overall, I was pretty darn proud of myself. I learned a ton, like you really don’t see how hard it is till you try, and I think it turned out pretty decent, all things considered.
The Result
My homemade YSL-inspired bag! It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I made it with my own two hands. It’s got that classic, stylish vibe that I was going for, and it actually holds its shape pretty well. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now, and I gotta say, it feels pretty good to carry around something I made myself. And you know, every time I look at it, I’m reminded that I can actually pull off some pretty cool things when I put my mind to it. Who knows, maybe I’ll try making another one someday, but for now, I’m just gonna enjoy this one. I’ve even had a few people ask me where I got it, which is always a nice little ego boost, haha.
